N with Tilde (ñ Ñ): Why Eñe Is Its Own Letter

N with tilde is ñ, and Ñ is its capital: the Spanish letter eñe, which Spanish sorts as a letter of its own after n. Tap a tile below to copy it. On a Mac, press Option+N and then N. Windows users hold Alt and key in 0241 on the number pad. On a phone, touch and hold N.

Why does Spanish count ñ as a letter of its own?

An e with an accent is still an e. An n with a tilde is not an n with a mark on top: Spanish calls it eñe and files it as a separate letter, and the software that sorts and searches Spanish text follows the same rule. That is why people who search for n with squiggle, n with ~ or n with accent mark end up at a letter, not at an accent.

The shape goes back to medieval spelling. Wiktionary's etymology (opens in a new tab) says a dash over a letter was medieval shorthand for an extra m or n, so ñ stood for nn, the usual Old Spanish spelling of this sound. Año is the classic case: its sound comes from the Latin -nn-.

Unicode writes the rule down. The CLDR collation rules for Spanish (opens in a new tab) hold one line for it, &N<ñ<<<Ñ: ñ is a new letter that comes after n, and Ñ is its capital. There is no such line for á or é. Under the Unicode Collation Algorithm (opens in a new tab), an accent on a vowel is a smaller difference that only breaks ties.

The same file keeps an older "traditional" order in which ch and ll were letters too. The standard order keeps only ñ.

How do Spanish sorting and search treat ñ?

Spanish-aware software sorts ñ as its own letter after n and keeps it apart in search, while English rules treat it as an n with a mark. The tables show six words sorted three ways, and two searches with accents ignored. Each result comes from the Intl.Collator in Node.js, which reads the CLDR data.

PositionSpanish rules (CLDR es)English rules (CLDR en)Raw code point order
1anoanoano
2anzueloañoanzuelo
3añoanzueloaño
4nubeñandúnube
5ñandúnubeoso
6osoosoñandú

Spanish puts año after anzuelo because ñ follows every n. English treats ñ as a plain n with a mark, so año sits next to ano. Raw code point order is what a naive sort gives. The ñ is U+00F1, past every unaccented letter, so ñandú drops to the end.

Both searches find café, because an accent on a vowel is a small difference. Only the English search finds año.

Which Spanish words change meaning without the ñ?

Leave off the tilde and the reader sees a different word, not a typo. Each pair below is spelled the same apart from the ñ, and the meanings come from Wiktionary. Spanish-aware search will not catch the slip either: a search for ano does not find año, because in Spanish they are two different words.

Why must a keyboard sold in Spain have an ñ?

Spanish law requires it. Real Decreto 564/1993 (opens in a new tab) says every mechanical, electric or electronic device sold in Spain for writing, recording, printing or sending data must include the letter ñ and the opening ¿ and ¡ marks. It came into force in April 1993, the day after it was published.

The decree gives two reasons. The Spanish Constitution tells public authorities to protect the Castilian language as part of Spain's cultural heritage. It also cites the consumer protection law of 1984: protecting a buyer's legitimate interests, the decree says, calls for the same characters.

What does ñ do in Galician, Basque, Filipino and Breton?

The Spanish n with accent is not only Spanish. The card below names every language whose Unicode CLDR alphabet holds it. Galician, Basque, Filipino and Breton each use it in their own way, and Breton uses it for no consonant at all.

LanguageWhat ñ is or doesEvidence
GalicianA letter of the alphabet, as in SpanishOfficial name A Coruña. In Spanish it is La Coruña.
BasqueA letter named eñe, the sound /ɲ/Listed in the Basque alphabet.
FilipinoA letter named enyeLas Piñas, Dasmariñas and Biñan, cities in the Philippines (GeoNames).
BretonA sign that nasalizes the vowel before itizelañ

The Galician row comes from the Unicode CLDR alphabets and Ley 2/1998 (opens in a new tab). That law made A Coruña the official name of the province and says, quoting the Galician language law, that the place names of Galicia have their Galician form as the only official one. The article changes, and the ñ stays.

The Basque and Filipino names of the letter come from Wiktionary's entry for ñ (opens in a new tab). The Breton rule comes from the spelling notes of Ofis ar Brezhoneg (opens in a new tab), the Breton language board, which writes that ñ marks the nasal pronunciation of certain word endings.

Can a domain name or an email address contain ñ?

A domain name can, but the DNS never sees the ñ. The DNS works in ASCII, so the browser turns each part of the name that holds an ñ into an A-label, a code that RFC 5890 (opens in a new tab) says always starts with xn--. A mailbox name with ñ is possible too, but only when every mail server on the way supports it.

The conversion is Punycode (RFC 3492) (opens in a new tab). The plain letters are copied first, then a hyphen, then a short code that says where the ñ goes. A capital Ñ is turned into ñ first under Unicode IDNA processing (opens in a new tab), so ESPAÑA and españa are one name.

Spain's .es registry began accepting ñ in a staged opening that started in October 2007, first for holders of existing names. The Red.es FAQ (opens in a new tab) lists ñ among the characters allowed and gives the first two rows of this table.

You typeThe DNS storesWhere the value comes from
eñe.esxn--ee-zja.esRed.es FAQ
miño.esxn--mio-8ma.esRed.es FAQ
españaxn--espaa-rtaComputed with RFC 3492
añoxn--ao-zjaComputed with RFC 3492

The algorithm reproduces both Red.es values exactly, so the last two rows were computed with it. During the opening phase, Red.es let a holder of a name spelled with n, nh, ni, nn, ny or gn ask for the version with ñ.

The path of a web address works differently. The URL Standard (opens in a new tab) converts the host to ASCII, but in the path it writes each character outside ASCII as its UTF-8 bytes in percent codes. So one address carries the ñ two ways: https://año.example/año/ becomes https://xn--ao-zja.example/a%C3%B1o/.

An email address is harder. RFC 6531 (opens in a new tab) lets the mailbox name before the @ hold ñ, but only through an extension called SMTPUTF8. A sending server must not pass such an address to a server that does not offer it. When Red.es opened .es names with ñ, its FAQ said a mailbox name such as dpeña was not supported. If you give out an address with ñ, keep a plain ASCII one for the servers that still refuse it.

Need a letter other than ñ?

Frequently asked questions about n with tilde

Is ñ just an n with an accent mark?

No. Spanish counts ñ as a separate letter named eñe, and the Unicode CLDR rules for Spanish sort it after every word spelled with a plain n. Leaving the squiggle off gives a different word: año means year, while ano means anus.

Why do Spanish speakers say n con tilde?

In Spanish the noun tilde covers more than the wavy line. Wiktionary gives it the senses diacritic, acute accent and tilde, so n con tilde is ñ and e con tilde is é. A search for n con tilde is a search for this letter.

What is the n with tilde Alt code?

Alt+0241 types ñ and Alt+0209 types Ñ. Turn on Num Lock, hold Alt, type the four digits on the number pad and let go of Alt. The digits on the top row of the keyboard do not work for Alt codes.

What is the shortcut for a capital N with tilde (Ñ)?

Only the second key changes. On a Mac it is Option+N, then Shift+N. In Word it is Ctrl+Shift+~, then Shift+N. On Windows the capital has its own code, Alt+0209, and on a phone you turn on Shift before you touch and hold N.

Why does my list put ñ words after z?

The list was sorted by raw code point, and U+00F1 comes after every unaccented letter. Sort with Spanish rules instead. The CLDR collation for Spanish puts ñ right after n, so ñandú lands between nube and oso.

Will an email to an address with ñ arrive?

Only when every mail server on the way supports SMTPUTF8, the extension RFC 6531 defines for addresses that are not ASCII. A sending server must not pass such an address to a server that lacks it, so the message is returned. Keep a plain ASCII address as a fallback.
