Swedish Keyboard: å, ä, ö and é on the Layout Finland Shares
Type å, ä, ö, é and à here, then copy: click a letter, press Shift first for its capital, or hold Alt with a, e or o and press again for the next form. On a Swedish keyboard å, ä and ö each have a key, while é takes two presses: the accent key right of +, then e.
Finland types on these same keys: this is Windows' Swedish layout, read from Microsoft's data. Press keys on your own keyboard or tap them here. In color: å right of P, ö and ä right of L, and the accent key right of +. That key waits for a letter: it, then e, makes é; with Shift, then a, à. Alt with a, e or o types the letters too.
Phones show the Swedish letters as large keys, Å, Ä and Ö under Shift; the full layout needs a screen as wide as a tablet. Your phone keyboard has each of them behind its plain vowel: Touch and hold A, then slide to à.
Swedish letters an English keyboard lacks dead key: it types nothing until the next key
- à Shift and `, then the letter
- é ´, then the letter
- å ä ö keys of their own
å, ä, ö, é and à in one click each; Shift first gives Å, Ä, Ö, É or À.
Which keys type Swedish letters in this editor?
In the box above, hold Alt and press the plain letter: the editor types its Swedish form. Add Shift for the capital. à, å and ä share one key: press Alt+A again straight away to switch between them.
| Press | Types | With Shift |
|---|---|---|
| Alt+A, again | à, then å, then ä | À, then Å, then Ä |
| Alt+E | é | É |
| Alt+O | ö | Ö |
These keys belong to this page only; they do nothing in other apps. On a Mac the editor leaves Option to macOS, so the Mac's own accent keys work in the box as they do everywhere else: à is Option+`, then A. AltGr on a Windows keyboard is left alone too, so it types what your layout prints on the key.
Which keys type å, ä and ö, and what does Caps Lock do to them?
Three keys right of the English letters, one press each. In Microsoft's drawing of the Swedish keyboard layout (opens in a new tab) (0000041D), å takes the key right of P. Then ö and ä take the two keys right of L, where English keyboards have the semicolon and the apostrophe. Shift gives Å, Ä and Ö, and so does Caps Lock: Microsoft's data lists the capitals for all three keys with Caps Lock on, as it does for a to z.
Swedish counts them as letters of their own, not a or o with a mark: CLDR's index of Swedish lists Å, Ä and Ö after Z. The Swedish alphabet page tells how that order came about. Windows uses this layout for Swedish in Sweden and, by Microsoft's default input profiles, for Swedish in Finland too.
How do the two Swedish dead keys put an accent on é and à?
A dead key types nothing on its own and puts its mark on the next letter. The Swedish layout has two of them, and their states hold every mark below:
- Press the key right of +, the ´ key, then e. That gives é, as in idé. Space after it gives the ´ by itself.
- Hold Shift on that key for the grave, `, then press a for à.
- The key right of å holds the two dots, ¨: then u gives ü. With Shift it holds ^, and with AltGr ~, which makes ñ before n.
Microsoft's table for each dead key, read from its data on 2026-10-25:
| Dead key | Press | Then a letter | Then Space |
|---|---|---|---|
| ´ | the ´ key | á é í ó ú ý | ´ |
| ¨ | the ¨ key | ä ë ï ö ü ÿ | ¨ |
| ` | Shift and the ´ key | à è ì ò ù | ` |
| ^ | Shift and the ¨ key | â ê î ô û | ^ |
| ~ | AltGr and the ¨ key | ã ñ õ | ~ |
The Mac's Swedish input source puts both dead keys in the same two places. We read it with UCKeyTranslate on macOS 26.6.2: ´ then e gives é, and Shift on that key gives the grave. It also adds a shortcut Windows lacks, Option with E for é in one press.
Where are @, $ and the brackets on a Swedish layout?
On AltGr on Windows, on Option on a Mac, and not always on the same key.
| Character | Windows: Swedish | Mac: Swedish |
|---|---|---|
| @ | AltGr on 2 | Option on 2 |
| $ | AltGr on 4 | Option on 4 |
| ¤ | Shift on 4 | none |
| € | AltGr on 5 or on E | Shift on 4 |
| [ ] | AltGr on 8, 9 | Option on 8, 9 |
| AltGr on 7, 0 | Shift, Option on 8, 9 | |
| ~ | AltGr on the ¨ key, then Space | Option on the ¨ key, then Space |
The Mac also ships Swedish – Legacy. Read the same way, it differs from Swedish on one chord: @ moves from Option with 2 to Option with the ' key beside Enter.
Is a Finnish keyboard the same as a Swedish one?
On Windows, key for key. Microsoft draws the Finnish layout (opens in a new tab), KLID 0000040B, from a data file that differs from the Swedish one only in its name. Every key and every dead key match. Finland's Finnish speakers get the Finnish layout by default and its Swedish speakers the Swedish one, and they type the same.
The Mac's Finnish and Swedish input sources differ in a single chord out of all we read: Shift and Option with X gives ≠ on Finnish and ˇ on Swedish. To add the layout, follow the vendor steps listed in the sources:
- Windows: Settings, Time & language, Language & region, then Language options and Add a keyboard.
- Mac: System Settings, Keyboard, Text Input, Edit, then the Add button.
The Swedish keyboard shortcuts in the cards below type each letter without switching. The German keyboard shares ä and ö with Swedish but puts them on QWERTZ.
What are the Swedish keyboard shortcuts on each device?
Without a Swedish layout, these are the documented ways to type the letters: one card per device, and in each card the letters typed the same way share a line, with the steps for the first of them.

Frequently asked questions about the Swedish keyboard
What is the ¤ sign on a Swedish keyboard?
It is the generic currency sign, which Unicode names CURRENCY SIGN. On the Windows Swedish layout, Shift with 4 types it, and $ is AltGr with 4. The Mac's Swedish input source has no ¤ at all: Shift with 4 gives € there, and Option with 4 gives $.
Can a Swedish keyboard type æ and ø?
The Windows Swedish layout cannot: no key in any state types either, and its dead keys make neither. A Mac can. On its Swedish input source, Option with the ä key types æ and Option with the ö key types ø. The æ and ø pages list the other ways.
Where are the backslash and the vertical bar on a Swedish keyboard?
On Windows, \ is AltGr with the + key and | is AltGr with the < key left of Z. A Mac's Swedish input source moves both to the 7 key: Option with 7 types |, and Shift and Option with 7 type \.
