Quinceañera Spelling: Keep the Ñ, the One From Año, Year
Quinceañera is spelled with ñ, the ñ of año, year: the word joins quince, fifteen, año and a suffix. The American Heritage Dictionary prints only quinceañera; Dictionary.com heads it so and also accepts quinceanera. AP style drops the tilde, as it does on things. Spanish dictionaries spell it with ñ and mostly use it for the girl.

Quinceañera or quinceanera: what do dictionaries and style guides say?
5 dictionaries and style guides, American and Spanish-language, rule on the 2 spellings below. Each row is one source's verdict on one spelling, in its own words where it has them, with a link to the page it is read from. Tap a spelling to copy it.
| Spelling | Source | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| American Heritage Dictionary (opens in a new tab) (American dictionary) | Preferred. Prints quin·ce·a·ñe·ra with no plain form, for the fifteenth-birthday celebration and, in a second sense, for the girl it honours. | |
| Diccionario del español de México (opens in a new tab) (Spanish-language dictionary) | Preferred. Under quinceañero, someone who is or turns fifteen, the feminine appears in its example: La quinceañera bailó con su papá. | |
| Diccionario de americanismos (ASALE) (opens in a new tab) (Spanish-language dictionary) | Preferred. Its entry quinceañera, labelled Puerto Rico, is the party for a girl turning fifteen; the girl herself is filed under quinceañero, -a. | |
| Dictionary.com (opens in a new tab) (American dictionary) | Preferred. The headword has the ñ, the English word is dated 1970–75, and a usage note explains what the celebration involves. | |
| AP Stylebook, as quoted by CJR (opens in a new tab) (American style guide) | Preferred. AP's 2019 answer reserves accent marks for people and keeps them off places and things, a party included, so wire copy reads quinceanera. | |
| Dictionary.com (opens in a new tab) (American dictionary) | Accepted. An “Or quinceanera” line under the headword lists the plain spelling as correct too. |
- quinceañera: preferred by American Heritage Dictionary, Diccionario del español de México, Diccionario de americanismos (ASALE) and Dictionary.com.
- quinceanera: preferred by AP Stylebook, as quoted by CJR; accepted by Dictionary.com.
How to spell quinceañera: keep the ñ. It is the ñ of año, year, sitting in the middle of the word, and the dictionaries AccentPad read on 2026-10-25 print it. Quinceanera, with a plain n, is the spelling Dictionary.com accepts and AP-style news copy uses.
Several familiar names are missing from the table for a reason. Neither Oxford learner's dictionary has an entry for the word; both URLs answered 404. Britannica, Merriam-Webster and Cambridge refused the check with HTTP 403. The Guardian's style guide and the GPO Style Manual have no entry for it.
Quince, año, -era: which part of quinceañera holds the ñ?
The ñ belongs to año, year, the middle part of quinceañera. The American Heritage Dictionary splits the word into quince, fifteen, plus año, plus the adjective suffix -ero, and calls quinceañera the feminine of quinceañero, fifteen years old. Dictionary.com gives the same parts and dates the English word to 1970–75.
| Part | Meaning | Latin source, in the American Heritage Dictionary |
|---|---|---|
| quince | fifteen | quīndecim |
| año | year | annus |
| -ero, feminine -era | an adjective suffix | -ārius |
Wiktionary calls the source Mexican Spanish, quince años, fifteen years, plus -ero. Word for word, a quinceañera is a fifteen-year-old, female.
Why does año without its tilde stop meaning year?
Año without the tilde is ano, a different Spanish word, so the tilde in quinceañera carries meaning, not decoration. Wikipedia's article on Ñ explains where it came from: Old Spanish wrote the word anno, from Latin annus, and scribes shortened the double n to one n with a wavy line above it.
The Guardian's style guide uses a title to make the point. The Spanish version of the sitcom The Golden Girls is Los Años Dorados, The Golden Years; without the tilde, it warns, the title names a part of the body instead. A quinceañera written without the ñ keeps its meaning in English, because readers know the word, but the Spanish part inside it is gone.
Portuguese is the contrast. Brazil's similar party is the festa de quinze anos, in Wikipedia's account, and in Portuguese the plain n is correct.
The girl or the party: what does quinceañera name in each language?
The quinceañera meaning depends on the language: in English it names mostly the party, then the girl; in Spanish dictionaries, mostly the girl. The American Heritage Dictionary defines a celebration of a Hispanic or Latina girl's fifteenth birthday, typically with a Roman Catholic Mass, and gives the girl as a second sense.
The Spanish-language dictionaries lean the other way:
- The Diccionario del español de México defines quinceañero, -a as someone who is or turns fifteen, especially a girl, and its example is the quinceañera dancing with her father.
- The Diccionario de americanismos has quinceañero, -a for the teenager in Mexico and Puerto Rico, and quinceañera for the party only in Puerto Rico.
- Wiktionary's Spanish entry says the party sense implies the word fiesta: a fiesta de quinceañera, a fifteen-year-old's party.
So "her quinceañera is in May" is English. In Spanish, the quinceañera is the one wearing the dress.
Quince años, los quince or quinceaños: which name for the party is used where?
Spanish has several names for the party, and they follow the country. The Diccionario del español de México records fiesta de quince años and, in everyday speech, just unos quince or los quince, as in a question about why someone missed Rebeca's quince. Other names, by source:
- Quinceaños, one masculine word: Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela and Chile, among the countries the Diccionario de americanismos labels.
- Quinceañera, for the party itself: Puerto Rico, in the same dictionary, and English in the United States.
- Quinces: the Cuban parties that came before today's quinceañeras, in Wikipedia's account.
- Fête des quinze ans: French Guiana and the French Caribbean, in Wikipedia.
English has a short form too. Wiktionary lists quince as a shortening of quinceañera, which spares the tilde question altogether.
Is there a quinceañero, and does a boy get the party?
Quinceañero exists, but the dictionaries define it as a person, not as a party for boys. The Diccionario del español de México gives quinceañero as an adjective and a noun for someone who is or turns fifteen, and adds that it is used especially of girls. The Diccionario de americanismos records quinceañero, -a for a teenager turning fifteen, generally a girl, in Mexico and Puerto Rico.
In English the masculine form lives mostly inside etymologies. The American Heritage Dictionary and Dictionary.com both explain quinceañera as the feminine of quinceañero, fifteen years old. Wikipedia lists quinceañero among the Spanish names of the celebration, next to quince años.
The spelling rule is the same for both genders. Quinceañero keeps the ñ of año, and so do the feminine quinceañera and its plural, quinceañeras.
Keen-say-ah-nyair-uh: how many syllables, and where is the stress?
In Spanish, quinceañera has five syllables, quin-ce-a-ñe-ra, with the stress on ñe. Wikcionario, the Spanish Wiktionary, transcribes it [kĩnseaˈɲeɾa] for speakers who say the c as s, and [kĩn̟θeaˈɲeɾa] for those who say it th. It classes the word as llana, stressed on the next-to-last syllable.
English speakers often run the ce and the a together. Dictionary.com respells the word keens-ah-nyair-uh, in four beats. Wiktionary lists several American forms, and the last one has no y at all:
- /ˌkɪnseɪ.ənˈjɛɹə/: every vowel kept, with the y of ñ.
- /ˌkɪnsənˈjɛɹə/: the middle vowels merged, the y kept.
- /ˌkɪnsəˈnɛɹə/: the y gone, the way a reader of quinceanera might say it.
The ñ is what keeps the y in the word. Write quinceanera, and nothing on the page tells a reader to say nyair.
Quinceañera or quinceanera on an invitation or in a news story?
On an invitation, a banner or a cake, write quinceañera. Every Spanish-language dictionary in the table uses the ñ, and so does the American Heritage Dictionary. In English text the plain form is accepted: Dictionary.com lists quinceanera as correct, so a hand-typed message without the ñ is no error.
News copy is different. A paper on AP style prints quinceanera in its own sentences and keeps the ñ only in a direct quotation in Spanish or in a person's name. Wikipedia titles its article Quinceañera, with the tilde.
The piñata page compares quinceañera with two more words of Mexican celebrations, piñata and posada, and the mañana page follows another Spanish word whose ñ English keeps. The n with tilde page types ñ on every device.
What happens to the accents of quinceañera in a file name or a link?
In UTF-8, the encoding of the web and of most files, ñ is 2 bytes, C3 B1. A program that reads those bytes as Windows-1252 shows ñ instead, so a file named quinceañera.pdf can arrive as quinceañera.pdf. Each row is the same word, as one place writes it:
| Where | How quinceañera is written there |
|---|---|
| As typed | quinceañera |
| UTF-8 read as Windows-1252 | quinceañera |
| In a link (percent-encoded) | quincea%C3%B1era |
| In HTML source | quinceañera |
| With the marks taken off | quinceanera |
Which AccentPad pages cover the letters of quinceañera?
Wiktionary lists quinceañera among the English words spelled with ñ, so it is also on that page's list of English words that keep the letter.
Every letter with the same mark, on one page: Tilde.
Other words spelled with ñ: jalapeño, mañana, piña colada, piñata.

Frequently asked questions about quinceañera
Does quinceañera need an accent mark as well as the tilde?
No. The wavy line belongs to the letter ñ and is not an accent mark. Wikcionario classes quinceañera as llana, stressed on ñe, the next-to-last syllable. The Guardian's style guide explains that Spanish stress generally falls there, and words that break the pattern carry a written accent.
Is quinceanera without the ñ a mistake?
Not in English. Dictionary.com lists quinceanera as a correct alternative, Wiktionary calls it an alternative spelling, and AP style uses it in news copy. The American Heritage Dictionary and the Spanish-language dictionaries print only quinceañera, so write the ñ in Spanish text and when your keyboard lets you.
What is the plural of quinceañera?
Quinceañeras, with an s at the end and the ñ where it was. Wiktionary gives quinceañeras for the English noun and quinceaneras for the plain spelling, and Wikcionario gives quinceañeras for Spanish. The tilde never moves, because the plural adds a letter only after era.
Which keys put the ñ into quinceañera?
Type quincea, then the ñ, then era. A Mac makes the ñ from Option+N followed by N; Windows from Alt+0241 on the number pad; a phone from a long press on N. For QUINCEAÑERA on a banner, the capital is Alt+0209.
