Piñata Spelling: Is It Piñata or Pinata in English?

Every dictionary checked here spells it piñata, with an n with tilde: the American Heritage Dictionary, Dictionary.com, Collins and both Oxford learner's dictionaries. In Spanish it is the only spelling. The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary alone also accepts pinata. The word comes from Italian pignatta, a cooking pot, and its ñ is said ny.

How do you type piñata with its accents on each device?

Piñata has ñ once. The capital Ñ is only needed when the whole word is in capitals, as in PIÑATA. Each row gives the documented method for one device or app; the vendor help pages are linked under the table.

Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (opens in a new tab) (British dictionary)Preferred. Puts piñata first, labelled especially North American English, and calls breaking it a party game.
Collins English Dictionary, on Dictionary.com (opens in a new tab) (British dictionary)Preferred. Writes piñata in the British entry, a papier-mâché party decoration full of sweets that is struck with a stick until it breaks.
Diccionario del español de México (opens in a new tab) (Spanish-language dictionary)Preferred. Describes a hollow figure made from a clay pot or cardboard, covered in coloured paper, filled with fruit, sweets and toys, and broken blindfolded with a stick.
Oxford Advanced American Dictionary (opens in a new tab) (American dictionary)Preferred. Has piñata alone, labelled from Spanish: a brightly decorated container, often shaped like a person or an animal.
American Heritage Dictionary (opens in a new tab) (American dictionary)Preferred. Divides the word pi·ña·ta, offers no plain spelling, and defines a container of candy and toys that blindfolded children break with sticks.
Dictionary.com (opens in a new tab) (American dictionary)Preferred. Spells the American entry piñata, plural piñatas, without an “Or” line: a papier-mâché figure or decorated crock from Mexico and Central America.
AP Stylebook, as quoted by CJR (opens in a new tab) (American style guide)Advised against. Since 2019 allows diacritical marks in people's names and in direct quotations in a language that uses them; for “things” and “anything else” it keeps them off.

AP Stylebook, as quoted by CJR (opens in a new tab) (American style guide)Preferred. By the same rule a party pot is a thing, so newsroom copy in AP style prints it without the tilde.
  • piñata: preferred by Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, Collins English Dictionary, on Dictionary.com, Diccionario del español de México, Oxford Advanced American Dictionary, American Heritage Dictionary and Dictionary.com; advised against by AP Stylebook, as quoted by CJR.
  • pinata: preferred by AP Stylebook, as quoted by CJR; accepted by Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary.

Short answer: write piñata. Use pinata only where you cannot type the ñ, or where a house style such as AP's asks for it.

On how to spell piñata, the record is unusually one-sided: the ñ is in every headword in the table, and the plain spelling turns up only once, as an alternative. AccentPad checked each entry on 2026-10-24. Sites that refused with HTTP 403, among them Merriam-Webster and the Spanish Royal Academy, are left out rather than quoted from memory.

From pignatta to piñata: what did the word first mean?

A cooking pot. The American Heritage Dictionary takes piñata from Spanish, and the Spanish from Italian pignatta, a kind of pot, probably from a dialect word pigna, pine cone, for its shape. Dictionary.com gives the same chain and dates the English word to 1885–90.

The Italian dictionary Treccani still defines pignatta as a fairly deep pot, usually of terracotta, and explains the name the same way: the oldest pignatte looked like pine cones. Its entry for pigna goes back to Latin pīnea, the feminine of an adjective meaning of the pine.

Spanish writes piñata where Italian writes pignatta. The pot that children break kept its name when it became a toy. Wiktionary records a second explanation, straight from Spanish piña, pinecone, because the paper cover of a traditional piñata resembles one.

Piñata, piña, pigna and piña colada: which word is which?

Piñata, piña, pigna and piña colada share a root and drift apart in meaning. In Mexican Spanish the piña is a pineapple. The Diccionario del español de México defines it as an oval fruit with yellow, juicy pulp and a crown of stiff leaves. The Italian pigna is the pine cone. The piñata sits between them, named for a shape, not a fruit.

The drink shows how easily English drops the letter. Its Spanish name means strained pineapple, and the American Heritage Dictionary and Dictionary.com spell it piña colada. The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary heads it pina colada and gives /ˌpiːnə/: a plain n with no y after it. For piñata the same Oxford dictionary still leads with the ñ.

What sound does the ñ in piñata stand for?

A ny sound, at the start of the middle syllable. Wiktionary gives the Spanish /piˈɲata/, split pi-ña-ta, and the English /pɪnˈjɑː.tə/; Dictionary.com respells the American pronunciation pin-yah-tuh. The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary also writes /pɪnˈjɑːtə/, with the j of IPA standing for the English y.

Dictionary.com gives two ways to say it. The first, pin-yah-tuh, is the English one. The second, pee-nyah-tah, is close to the Spanish. Both have the y sound, and in both it comes from the ñ.

The piñata tilde is what tells a reader to put that y in. Written pinata, the word gives no hint of it. That is the real cost of the plain spelling: not a wrong word, but a lost sound.

Languages that borrowed the word from Spanish each settled the ñ their own way. Wiktionary lists the descendants: Catalan pinyata, with ny; Portuguese pinhata, with nh; Dutch piñata, with the Spanish letter itself.

Why does Mexico break piñatas at the posadas?

Because that is where the tradition was planted. The Diccionario del español de México says piñatas are traditionally broken in the season of the posadas, and that they are also common at children's parties. Its example sentence is a posada with piñatas, ponche and candles.

The same dictionary's entry for posada spells out the evening. The posadas are Catholic festivities typical of Mexico, held from 16 to 24 December to recall Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem. There is a rosary and a litany, a procession with the pilgrims, and the verses that ask for and give lodging. Afterwards the piñatas are broken, the colación of sweets is shared out and ponche is served.

Wikipedia gives the history behind it. In Spain the first Sunday of Lent was Piñata Sunday, and Wiktionary lists Domingo de Piñata among the Spanish derived terms.

In Mexico, local records place the first Mexican piñatas in Acolman, north of Mexico City, in 1586, where Augustinian friars used them in the Las Posadas celebrations. In that teaching, the points of the piñata stood for the deadly sins and the sweets inside for temptation.

The game went north and lost its church meaning on the way. The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary labels the word especially North American English. It defines the piñata as a party game.

Do quinceañera and posada keep an ñ the way piñata does?

Quinceañera does, and posada never had one. English has borrowed several words for Mexican celebrations, and each brings its own spelling. The American Heritage Dictionary keeps the ñ in quin·ce·a·ñe·ra and explains where it comes from: quince, fifteen, plus año, year, plus an adjective suffix. Dictionary.com heads the word quinceañera and adds “Or quinceanera”, an alternative its piñata entry does not offer.

  • Piñata keeps the ñ of piña, in Wiktionary's account. The Italian pignatta has gn.
  • Quinceañera keeps the ñ of año, year. Dictionary.com also allows quinceanera; the quinceañera page compares the two.
  • Posada has no mark. It is Spanish for lodging, and the American Heritage Dictionary defines it as a Christmas festival that acts out Joseph and Mary's search for a place to stay.

On an invitation, follow the dictionaries: the piñata spelling with the tilde, quinceañera with it too, posada with no mark at all.

What does piñata mean when it is not a party pot?

Something everyone takes a swing at. The American Heritage Dictionary gives a second sense: a frequent object or victim of ongoing criticism or abuse. Wiktionary records the same figurative use. Wiktionary even lists piñata as an English verb, to hit something or someone with sticks after filling them with candy, with the forms piñataed and piñataing.

The academies' Diccionario de americanismos lists more senses, country by country:

  • In Honduras, a piñata is a person everyone criticises, abuses or hits.
  • In Honduras and Nicaragua, it is an unfair, illegal share-out of public goods or money.
  • In Uruguay, it is a brawl, a fight with fists.
  • In Mexico, in young people's slang, it means of poor quality, said of a person or a thing.

None of these senses changes the spelling: every one of them keeps the ñ. The n with tilde page types it on any device, and the jalapeño word page compares the spellings of the pepper the same way.

What happens to the accents of piñata in a file name or a link?

In UTF-8, the encoding of the web and of most files, ñ is 2 bytes, C3 B1. A program that reads those bytes as Windows-1252 shows ñ instead, so a file named piñata.pdf can arrive as piñata.pdf. Each row is the same word, as one place writes it:

Frequently asked questions about piñata

Is it piñata or pinata?

Piñata. Every dictionary consulted here heads its entry that way, from the American Heritage Dictionary to Collins. Only the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary lists pinata, as “also pinata”. Newsrooms on AP style leave the tilde off. AP keeps marks for people's names.

Does piñata have an accent mark?

Not in the sense of an accent on a vowel. The wavy line over the n is a tilde, and it turns n into ñ, a separate letter of the alphabet that the Diccionario del español de México names eñe. Spanish Wiktionary classes piñata as llana, stressed on its next-to-last syllable, ña, and writes no accent mark on it.

What is the plural of piñata?

Piñatas. Dictionary.com gives piñatas as the plural, and the Diccionario del español de México uses it in its example, a posada with piñatas, punch and candles. Without the tilde it is pinatas, as the Vocabulary.com note on the Dictionary.com page writes it.

How do you type piñata with the ñ?

Type pi, then the ñ, then ata. On a Mac that ñ is Option+N followed by N. In Windows it is Alt+0241 on the number pad. On a phone, a long press on N offers it. A tap on piñata in the spellings table copies the whole word.
