Vietnamese Keyboard Online: Telex, VNI and Every Tone Mark
This Vietnamese keyboard types ă, â, đ, ê, ô, ơ, ư and every vowel with its tone in the box below. Type Telex on your own keys (aa for â, as for á), tap the letters, or click the Windows layout, then copy the text. On that layout the number row types ă, â, ê, ô, the tones and đ.
Drawn here is Microsoft's Vietnamese layout for Windows: letters on 1 to 4 and 0, tones on 5 to 9, ư and ơ right of P, digits under AltGr. Shaded keys are those an English keyboard lacks. Click a vowel, then its tone: a, then 8, makes á. Telex is on, so your own keys work too: aa gives â. Alt with A, D, E, O or U types the letters with a hat, breve, horn or stroke.
A phone gets the toneless letters and one key per tone instead of the Windows rows: tap a vowel, then the tone that belongs on it. The keyboard built into the phone hides some toned vowels under the plain letter as well: Touch and hold A, then slide to à.

Which keys type Vietnamese letters in this editor?
In the box above, hold Alt and press the plain letter: the editor types its Vietnamese form. Add Shift for the capital. ă and â share one key: press Alt+A again straight away to switch between them. The 60 tone-marked vowels have no Alt key: tap them in the row of letters.
| Press | Types | With Shift |
|---|---|---|
| Alt+A, again | ă, then â | Ă, then  |
| Alt+D | đ | Đ |
| Alt+E | ê | Ê |
| Alt+O, again | ô, then ơ | Ô, then Ơ |
| Alt+U | ư | Ư |
These keys belong to this page only; they do nothing in other apps. On a Mac the editor leaves Option to macOS, so the Mac's own accent keys work in the box as they do everywhere else: à is Option+`, then A. AltGr on a Windows keyboard is left alone too, so it types what your layout prints on the key.
Telex, number keys or the Windows layout: which should you use?
A Vietnamese keyboard does not have to be a Vietnamese layout. An input method can add the marks to the English keys you already have. Microsoft's Vietnamese IME (opens in a new tab) page documents two methods for Windows, and the layout drawn above is a third.
| Method | Where you find it | For â | For á | For vườn |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Telex | Windows: Vietnamese Telex, the default. This editor | aa | as | vuwofwn |
| Number keys | Windows: Vietnamese Number Key-based | a6 | a1 | vuon72 |
| Vietnamese layout | Windows: Vietnamese, drawn at the top | the 2 key | a, then the 8 key | v, ư, ơ, the 5 key, n |
For a Vietnamese keyboard on a laptop, Telex is the one to learn first. It uses letter keys alone, so your hands never leave them, and it is what Windows installs unless you ask for something else.
A Mac offers the same choice under other names. We listed its input sources on macOS 26.6.2 on 2026-10-21: Vietnamese, Telex, Simple Telex, VNI and VIQR. The rules on this page are Microsoft's; the Mac versions are not described key by key here.
How does Telex turn plain letters into ă, ơ and the tones?
You type a letter, then a second key that says what to add. Doubling a, e or o adds the hat, so aa is â. W adds the breve or the horn: aw is ă, ow is ơ, uw is ư. Dd is đ.
The tone is one more letter, typed right after the vowel:
| Key | Tone | Example |
|---|---|---|
| s | dấu sắc | as gives á |
| f | dấu huyền | af gives à |
| r | dấu hỏi | ar gives ả |
| x | dấu ngã | ax gives ã |
| j | dấu nặng | aj gives ạ |
The tone names are the ones Basic Vietnamese (opens in a new tab), Michigan State University's textbook, teaches. A tone and a letter mark can come in either order: ofw and owf both end as ờ.
The Vietnamese keyboard on this page follows those rules and no others, each on the letter right before the key. So put the tone straight after its vowel: tieesng gives tiếng, while tieengs leaves the s as a letter. Switch Telex off for English words.
What does each number key type on the Vietnamese keyboard layout for Windows?
The Vietnamese keyboard layout that Windows ships gives its number row to letters and tones, and moves the digits to AltGr. Microsoft's Vietnamese keyboard (opens in a new tab) page, KLID 0000042A, draws every key, and the table below was read from its key data.
| Key | Types | With AltGr |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | ă, â, ê, ô; Shift gives the capital | 1 to 4 |
| 5 | the dấu huyền mark, U+0300 | 5 |
| 6 | the dấu hỏi mark, U+0309 | 6 |
| 7 | the dấu ngã mark, U+0303 | 7 |
| 8 | the dấu sắc mark, U+0301 | 8 |
| 9 | the dấu nặng mark, U+0323 | 9 |
| 0 | đ; Shift gives Đ | 0 |
| = | ₫, the dong sign | = |
Two more letters sit right of P: ư, then ơ. The tone keys are not dead keys. Each one types a combining mark after the vowel already on the screen, so ấ is â and then the 8 key.
Unicode also has ấ as one character. The editor joins the pair into it as you type. The Vietnamese alphabet page shows why the letter mark has to come before the tone.
How do you add a Vietnamese keyboard on Windows, a Mac or a phone?
Every system adds a Vietnamese keyboard beside the one you have, and you switch between them while you type. On Windows, Microsoft's steps are:
- Open Settings, then Time & language, then Language & region.
- Select Add a language, choose Vietnamese, then Next and Install. Vietnamese Telex comes with it.
- For number keys, select Options next to Vietnamese, then Language options, Add a keyboard, Vietnamese Number Key-based.
- Switch with the Windows logo key and the Spacebar. The tray then shows VIE instead of ENG.
On a Mac, open System Settings, then Keyboard, Text Input and Edit, and add one of the Vietnamese sources named above, as Apple (opens in a new tab) describes. Control-Space bar brings back the last one.
An iPhone adds it under Settings, General, Keyboard, Keyboards, Add New Keyboard, according to Apple's iPhone guide (opens in a new tab). Gboard on Android adds it from Settings at the top of the keyboard, then Languages and Add keyboard, as Google (opens in a new tab) says.
What are the Vietnamese keyboard shortcuts on each device?
Without a Vietnamese layout, these are the documented ways to type the letters: one card per device, and in each card the letters typed the same way share a line, with the steps for the first of them.

Frequently asked questions about the Vietnamese keyboard
Why do the number keys type letters on a Vietnamese keyboard?
You switched to the Windows layout named Vietnamese, which puts ă, â, ê, ô, the tones and đ on 1 to 0 and keeps each digit under AltGr. Windows adds Vietnamese with the Telex input method by default, which adds the marks with letter keys alone, so choose Vietnamese Telex in the input list instead.
Is the tone typed before or after the vowel?
After it, in all three methods: as in Telex, a1 with number keys, a and then the 8 key on the Windows layout. Microsoft adds that the number-key method also takes the tone at any point in the word, so vuon72 still gives vườn. Its Telex examples always put the tone letter straight after the vowel.
Can I type Vietnamese on an English keyboard without installing anything?
Yes. Leave Telex on and type into the box at the top of this page: uw becomes ư and es becomes é while you write, on the keys you already have. Then press Copy all and paste the text into any app. Switch Telex off when you need English words such as see or ask to stay as typed.
What does the ₫ key do on the Vietnamese layout?
It types ₫, which Unicode names the dong sign, on the key that types = on an English keyboard. Shift on that key still gives +, and the equals sign itself moves to AltGr. Like the digits, it is read from Microsoft's own data for the layout, not from a picture.
How do I get a capital Ă, Ấ or Đ on the Windows layout?
Hold Shift on the letter key: Shift with 1 types Ă and Shift with 0 types Đ. The tone keys type the same mark with or without Shift, so for Ấ press Shift with 2, then 8 with or without Shift. In the box here, Shift on the screen works the same way for every key in the row.
