Mexico Accent Mark: México in Spanish, Mexico in English
In Spanish, yes: México has an acute accent on the e, the spelling the Diccionario panhispánico de dudas recommends, and Méjico with a j is also correct there. In English, no: the American Heritage Dictionary, Dictionary.com and AP style write Mexico. On a Mac, Option+E, then E types the é.

México, Mexico or Méjico: what do dictionaries and style guides say?
5 dictionaries and style guides, American, British and Spanish-language, rule on the 3 spellings below. Each row is one source's verdict on one spelling, in its own words where it has them, with a link to the page it is read from. Tap a spelling to copy it.
| Spelling | Source | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Diccionario panhispánico de dudas (RAE and ASALE) (opens in a new tab) (Spanish-language dictionary) | Preferred. Calls México the recommended spelling of the place name, pronounced [méjiko], and asks for the x in every derived word: mexicano, mexicanismo. | |
| AP Stylebook, as quoted by CJR (opens in a new tab) (American style guide) | Advised against. Since 2019 allows accent marks on the names of people who use them, and keeps them off everything else: accents are for “people, not places”. | |
| American Heritage Dictionary (opens in a new tab) (American dictionary) | Preferred. Heads its entry Mex·i·co, with no accent, for the country of south-central North America, while it keeps the accent in the Yucatán Channel. | |
| Dictionary.com (opens in a new tab) (American dictionary) | Preferred. Heads its American entry Mexico, a republic in southern North America, and gives the Gulf of Mexico its Spanish name, Golfo de México. | |
| Collins English Dictionary, on Dictionary.com (opens in a new tab) (British dictionary) | Preferred. Heads its British entry Mexico and gives the official name as United Mexican States. | |
| AP Stylebook, as quoted by CJR (opens in a new tab) (American style guide) | Preferred. Writes places without their accent marks, so English copy names the country Mexico. | |
| Diccionario panhispánico de dudas (RAE and ASALE) (opens in a new tab) (Spanish-language dictionary) | Accepted. Calls the forms with j correct as well, notes that Méjico and mejicano were the usual spellings in Spain until not long ago, and recommends the x because the country itself uses it. | |
| Collins English Dictionary, on Dictionary.com (opens in a new tab) (British dictionary) | Preferred. Gives the country's Spanish name as Méjico, with a j, and does not mention México. |
- México: preferred by Diccionario panhispánico de dudas (RAE and ASALE); advised against by AP Stylebook, as quoted by CJR.
- Mexico: preferred by American Heritage Dictionary, Dictionary.com, Collins English Dictionary, on Dictionary.com and AP Stylebook, as quoted by CJR.
- Méjico: preferred by Collins English Dictionary, on Dictionary.com; accepted by Diccionario panhispánico de dudas (RAE and ASALE).
The Mexico accent mark belongs to Spanish spelling, and English leaves it off.
The table sets the Spanish and the English verdicts side by side, each read from a page that answered AccentPad on 2026-10-18. The Diccionario panhispánico de dudas, the Spanish academies' guide, refused its own web page that day (HTTP 403). Its México entry is quoted from the press dossier the RAE publishes for the dictionary, which reprints the entry whole.
Merriam-Webster and Britannica refused as well, and nothing here comes from them.
Why does México take an accent in Spanish?
Because of where the stress falls. Wiktionary splits the word Mé-xi-co, and the stress is on the first of those syllables, the third from the end. Spanish writes the mark on every word stressed there: FundéuRAE explains that imagen gains a tilde in the plural, imágenes, for exactly that reason. Without the é, a Spanish reader would stress xi.
The mark records stress, not a sound of its own, so it comes and goes inside one family of words:
| Word | Syllables | Stressed syllable | Written accent | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| México | Mé-xi-co | the third from the end | yes | Wiktionary |
| Méjico | Mé-ji-co | the third from the end | yes | Wiktionary |
| mexicano | me-xi-ca-no | ca, next to last: [mejikáno] | no | Diccionario panhispánico de dudas |
So the adjective is plain mexicano, and the capital M at the start of México is no reason to drop the é either; capitals are covered further down.
Why is the x in México said like a Spanish j?
Because the spelling is older than the sound. The Diccionario panhispánico de dudas gives the pronunciation as [méjiko] and marks [méksiko] as incorrect.
In this name, as in Oaxaca and Texas, the x keeps an older value: in earlier Spanish it wrote the sound that the letter j writes today. Wiktionary transcribes the modern name /ˈmexiko/ and the Early Modern Spanish one /ˈmeʃiko/, with an sh sound.
The name itself is older still. Wiktionary and Wikipedia trace it to Classical Nahuatl Mēxihco, a name for the Valley of Mexico, whose people were the Mexica. English kept the Spanish letters and reads them its own way. Dictionary.com gives the American pronunciation as /ˈmɛksɪˌkoʊ/, with ks for the x and the stress still on the first syllable.
Is Méjico, with a j, a spelling mistake?
No. The Diccionario panhispánico de dudas calls the forms with j correct as well. It says Méjico and mejicano were the usual spellings in Spain until not long ago. It still recommends the x, because the country itself writes it, as does most of Spanish America. Wiktionary labels Méjico uncommon and places it in Spain and Argentina.
English dictionaries can lag behind. The British entry on Dictionary.com comes from Collins English Dictionary. It gives the official name United Mexican States and the Spanish name Méjico, with no mention of México. For Spanish written for Mexican readers, México is the form to use: it is the spelling the academies recommend because Mexico uses it.
Which places share the name México?
Spanish uses México for the country, for its capital and for one of its states, and English gives each its own name. Wiktionary lists each of them among the senses of México, along with the Spanish names that tell them apart. Two more names reach beyond the border.
| In English | In Spanish | What it is | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mexico, officially the United Mexican States | México, Estados Unidos Mexicanos | the country | Collins; Wikipedia |
| Mexico City | Ciudad de México, the Distrito Federal until 2016 | the capital | Wiktionary; The Guardian |
| State of Mexico, Mexico State | Estado de México | the state around the capital, with Toluca as its capital | Wiktionary; Dictionary.com |
| New Mexico | Nuevo México | a state of the United States | Wikipedia |
| Gulf of Mexico | Golfo de México | the arm of the Atlantic between Mexico, Cuba and the United States | Dictionary.com |
The capital's Spanish name is recent. In January 2016 President Enrique Peña Nieto officially renamed the Federal District, which residents had called the DF for decades, Mexico City.
The Guardian's report on the change keeps the accents on people's names, Peña Nieto and Adrián Rueda. It writes the country and the city as Mexico. New Mexico keeps the Spanish form in its own symbols. Wikipedia lists "Así Es Nuevo México" among its state anthems, and before statehood the region was Santa Fe de Nuevo México.
Does MÉXICO in capital letters keep the accent?
In Spanish, yes. The Diccionario panhispánico de dudas, in its entry on capital letters, says writing in capitals does not exempt a word from the tilde: ÁFRICA, like África. Only acronyms, written wholly in capitals, never take one, so CIA and not CÍA.
FundéuRAE calls the belief that capitals go without accents widespread and wrong, and adds that the RAE never set such a rule. A Spanish heading, sign or form therefore reads MÉXICO, and the capital É is in the methods table above.
In English the question does not come up. MEXICO in an English headline is the English name in capitals, with nothing missing.
Should you write México in an English sentence?
Usually not: in English copy the Mexico accent mark comes off. The AP Stylebook keeps accent marks for people, "not places", in its Ask the Editors answer as CJR quotes it, so AP copy writes Mexico. The Guardian's style guide keeps accents on the names of people and places but leaves them off anglicised names, and its own reporting writes Mexico.
Keep México where the Spanish is the point: a Spanish name such as Ciudad de México, a postal address, a quotation, or a text in Spanish. Even in English, writing Mexico with accent mark intact is no error.
Wiktionary records México as an alternative English spelling of Mexico, with quotations from books published in 1968 and 2009. The dictionaries in the table still head their entries Mexico.
What happens to the accents of México in a file name or a link?
In UTF-8, the encoding of the web and of most files, é is 2 bytes, C3 A9. A program that reads those bytes as Windows-1252 shows é instead, so a file named México.pdf can arrive as México.pdf. Each row is the same word, as one place writes it:
| Where | How México is written there |
|---|---|
| As typed | México |
| UTF-8 read as Windows-1252 | México |
| In a link (percent-encoded) | M%C3%A9xico |
| In HTML source | México |
| With the marks taken off | Mexico |
Which AccentPad pages cover the letters of México?
Every letter with the same mark, on one page: Accent aigu.
