Romanian Alphabet: Why ă, â, î, ș and ț Are Not Optional

Romanian uses the whole Latin a to z and adds ă, â, î, ș and ț, each filed right after its base letter. DOOM 3, the Romanian Academy's spelling dictionary, makes the marks obligatory, because they change words: apă is water, apa is the water. K, q, w and y are letters too. Tap a letter below to copy it.

What are the letters of the Romanian alphabet, in order?

The Unicode CLDR lists 31 letters for Romanian, from a to z. The 5 lit ones are letters English does not have: ă â î ș ț. Tap a capital or a small letter to copy it.

The order is CLDR's collation for Romanian, applied by ICU 78.3 (CLDR 48.0).

Which Romanian letters go beyond a to z?

5 letters of the Romanian alphabet are not in English, and each carries a mark. Of these, â, î, ș and ț link to their own page with every shortcut.

How do you type the Romanian letters on each device?

Each row gives the method the vendor documents for one Romanian letter. The help pages are linked at the end.

What does each mark change in a Romanian word?

A Romanian diacritic changes the word, and often its grammar. DOOM 3 (opens in a new tab), the spelling dictionary of the Romanian Academy, sets out the Romanian alphabet and gives a pair of words for each mark. Its glosses are grammatical. The English meanings below come from Wiktionary's entries for apă (opens in a new tab), apa (opens in a new tab), cântă (opens in a new tab), mână (opens in a new tab), râu (opens in a new tab), rău (opens in a new tab), în (opens in a new tab) and in (opens in a new tab).

Mark, as DOOM names itWith the markWithout it, or with anotherWhat the mark decides
căciula, the cap (a breve)apă, waterapa, the waterwhether the noun has its article
căciulacântă, sangcânta, was singingthe tense: simple perfect or imperfect
circumflex, on amână, handmană, a disease in DOOM's glosstwo unrelated nouns
circumflex against the caprâu, riverrău, bada noun or an adjective
circumflex, on iîn, inin, flaxa preposition or a noun

Read the first row again. In apă, the cap on the last letter is all that separates "water" from "the water". Romanian puts its definite article at the end of the noun, and here the article is a plain a. Strip the marks and every such noun reads as if it had its article.

DOOM's verdict on Romanian diacritics is short: using them is obligatory. The marks go on capitals too. The comma under ș and ț has a story of its own, a comma and not a cedilla, and the s with accent page tells it. CLDR still lists the cedilla forms ş and ţ among Romanian's auxiliary letters, as the block further down shows.

Why did the Romanian Academy bring back â in 1993?

Because its General Assembly voted for it. On 17 February 1993, the Romanian Academy decided on a return to â and to sunt. DOOM 3's spelling rules (opens in a new tab) set out what followed. The vowel [î] has two letters again: â inside a word and î at its edges. The verb form sunt, I am or they are, replaced sînt. Wiktionary now marks sînt (opens in a new tab) as a dated form.

The rule is not only about position. DOOM sorts the cases in the table below.

CaseLetterDOOM's examples
inside a wordâcâmp, sfânt, târg, Târgu Jiu
inside a form of a verb that ends in -îâcoborând, coborât, from a coborî
first letter of a wordîîncă, a începe
last letter of a verb that ends in -îîa urî, a hotărî
a compound whose second part starts with îîbineînțeles
a Cyrillic ы inside a name or loanwordâKolâma, kârgâz
sînt quoted from an older textâsânt

Two notes in DOOM explain why you still meet î inside words. The â spelling is compulsory in official publications in Romania, though breaking it there carries no legal sanction. It is compulsory in schools too, where breaking it lowers the mark. Some publishers, institutions and writers keep the older rule of î only. DOOM says Romanian thus uses two spellings at the same time, sometimes in one publication.

The capital  has one more limit.  never starts a word, so DOOM says the capital appears only in words set wholly in capitals, as on a poster. You will see it in ROMÂNIA on a sign, and never at the start of a sentence.

When may a Romanian name or acronym leave out its marks?

Only in two cases that DOOM 3 names. Everywhere else the rule holds, on capitals as on small letters. The table sorts what you may meet in Romanian text, with DOOM's verdict on each.

What you seeDOOM 3's verdictExample
an ordinary word without its markswrong: diacritics are obligatoryapa written for apă
a capital without its markwrong: the marks go on capitals too
a family name without marksallowed, by the family's tradition and the bearer's wishHasdeu, said with ș; Sperantia, said with ț
an acronym without marksallowed in some acronyms, and the reading changesCSAT, SNSPA; but CNȘT kept its Ș
sh for ș, ts or tz for țwrong, though common in electronic messages
ã for ăwrong, even for graphic effect

The family names are the surprise. DOOM transcribes Hasdeu as [hașdeu] and Densusianu as [densușanu]: the s is written plain and said as ș. It lists other people who write Hașdeu or Speranța in full. So a name without marks may be correct for one person and wrong for another. Ask the bearer, or copy the name from their own papers.

The acronyms work the other way. In CSAT, the Supreme Council for the Defence of the Country, the Ț of Țării becomes a T. DOOM gives two readings, one letter by letter and one as a word, and neither has the ț sound. CNȘT, a former national council for science, kept its Ș.

Are k, q, w and y real letters of the Romanian alphabet?

Yes. DOOM 3's table of the Romanian alphabet lists them in their place. They serve loanwords, foreign proper names and some Romanian names spelled on a foreign model. The Academy recognised q, w and y in 1982, in the first DOOM. K is older: it came in with the Latin alphabet, because the Cyrillic alphabet before it had a k.

DOOM still calls the four letters connoted as foreign. None of them occurs in the old core of Romanian words, so a word with one looks borrowed. K is the best assimilated, helped by kilogram and kilometru. Q is the rarest letter in Romanian. W stays clearly foreign when it ends a word and is said as a short, gliding u. Said as v, as in kiwiul, it needs no special treatment.

Some of these words have older look-alikes written with Romanian letters. DOOM lists pairs that sound alike, or nearly so.

Written with k, q, w or yOlder word with Romanian letters
boyboi
kitchit
koalacoala
Qatarcatar
wagon(-lit)vagon

The pairs show the Romanian way of writing the same sounds: ch for the k sound before i, c before a or o, v for w and i for y.

How do Romanians say the names of their letters?

DOOM 3 gives every letter a name, and most consonants have two or three readings. The Romanian letter names in the table are copied from the dictionary's table of the Romanian alphabet. DOOM notes that a consonant's name does not match its sound. The readings ef, haș, kapa, el, em, en, er, es and zet are used mostly when reading out abbreviations, chemical symbols and units.

LetterName in DOOM 3What the name tells you
ăăa vowel letter is named by its sound
âî din a, the î of athe vowel [î], written with a
îî din i, the î of ithe same vowel, written with i
hhaș or hîhaș is also the reading in abbreviations
kka or kapakapa is the abbreviation reading
șșe or șî
țțe or țî
wdublu ve or dublu vîdouble v
yi grecthe Greek i

The two names for one sound settle a practical question. When you spell a Romanian word aloud, say "î din a" or "î din i". The listener then knows which letter to write, and the 1993 rule above tells you which one the word needs.

Which names and places are spelled with ă, â, î, ș or ț?

Given names come from Wikidata, the most widely covered first by the number of Wikipedia editions about them, and places come from the GeoNames list of cities, largest population first, kept only where an official language of the country writes the letter.

How to type Romanian letters, step by step

Step 1: Mac: Option+I for â and î

On the US or ABC layout, press Option+I and then A for â, or Option+I and then I for î. For a capital, press Option+I and then Shift+A or Shift+I.

Step 2: Mac: the Character Viewer for ă, ș and ț

Press Fn/Globe+E and search the Unicode name: latin small letter a with breve, latin small letter s with comma below or latin small letter t with comma below. Use capital in place of small for Ă, Ș and Ț.

Step 3: Windows: an Alt code where one exists

Alt+0226 types â and Alt+0238 types î, with Alt+0194 and Alt+0206 for the capitals. Ă, ș and ț have no Alt code, so press Win+., open Symbols and pick them there.

Step 4: Microsoft Word: the hex code, then Alt+X

Type 0103 and press Alt+X for ă. The codes 0219 and 021b give ș and ț, and 0102, 0218 and 021a give their capitals.

Step 5: Before you send: search for the look-alikes

Search the finished text for ã, ş and ţ. Each one is a different character from the Romanian ă, ș and ț. Replace every hit with the letter from the grid at the top of this page.

Which other letters does the CLDR list for Romanian?

The Unicode CLDR lists these as auxiliary letters for Romanian: characters that turn up in Romanian text without being letters of its alphabet, in loanwords, foreign names or dictionary marks.

Need a letter outside the Romanian alphabet?

Frequently asked questions about Romanian letters

Was Romanian ever written in the Cyrillic alphabet?

Yes. DOOM 3 says Romanian was, as a rule, written in Cyrillic until 1860, and in a transition alphabet in the last years before the Latin one was adopted. In the Moldavian SSR an adapted Russian Cyrillic alphabet stayed in use until 1989.

Does the circumflex on â and î mark stress in Romanian?

No. DOOM 3 says the Romanian circumflex has other jobs than in other languages and does not mark stress. It turns a and i into â and î, which spell one and the same vowel. DOOM transcribes both as [î], whichever letter the word is written with.

Is ã the same letter as ă?

No. Ă carries a breve, a small cup, and is U+0103. Ã carries a tilde and is U+00E3, a letter of Portuguese and Vietnamese among others. DOOM 3 calls ã in place of ă wrong, even when it is used only for its look.

Can a Romanian surname keep î inside the word?

Yes. DOOM 3 lets family names write the vowel inside the word with â or î, by family tradition, the bearer's wish and the civil records. It lists Brâncuși and Pârvan beside other bearers spelled Brîncuși and Pîrvan.

Is there a standard Romanian keyboard?

Yes. Law 183/2006, cited in DOOM 3, requires public authorities, institutions and notaries to use the standard Romanian keyboard and character coding for electronic documents. Microsoft's list of Windows layouts has Romanian (Standard), KLID 00010418, since Vista, beside Romanian (Legacy), 00000418, and Romanian (Programmers), 00020418.
